Ice and water shield
Ice and water shield is a peel-and-stick membrane used in high-risk areas. It adheres to the roof deck and helps seal around nail penetrations.
Common locations include eaves, valleys, chimneys, skylights, sun tunnels, plumbing stacks, roof vents, roof-to-wall intersections, and other areas where water backup or concentrated flow is more likely.
This membrane does not replace proper flashing, ventilation, insulation, or drainage. It adds an important layer of protection where the roof is most vulnerable.
Synthetic underlayment
Synthetic underlayment is installed over the remaining roof deck areas not covered by ice and water shield. It provides a secondary protective layer beneath the shingles.
Modern synthetic underlayments are typically stronger, lighter, and more tear-resistant than traditional felt paper. They help protect the deck during installation and add backup protection beneath the finished roof.
A roof performs best when the surface layer, waterproofing layers, flashing details, and structural deck are all treated as one system.
Flashing: where most leak prevention happens
Flashing is metal used anywhere the normal flow of water is interrupted. These areas are naturally more vulnerable because water must be redirected around a transition, opening, wall, valley, chimney, or penetration.
A roof can have new shingles and still leak if the flashing is incorrect, reused improperly, poorly sealed, or missing altogether.

Headwall flashing
Headwall flashing is installed where a roof slope meets a vertical wall at the top of a roof plane. It helps redirect water from the wall transition back onto the roof surface.
Valley flashing
Valleys collect water from two roof slopes, making them one of the highest-flow areas on the roof. Because of that, valleys need careful waterproofing, proper metal or approved shingle detailing, and correct fastener placement.
Nails should not be placed where they create a direct water-entry point in the main valley channel.
Chimney flashing and counter-flashing
Chimneys require careful flashing because they interrupt the roof surface on all sides. A complete chimney detail may include apron flashing, step flashing, backpan flashing, and counter-flashing.
Counter-flashing protects the top edge of the flashing system and helps prevent water from getting behind the metal.
Chimney crickets
A chimney cricket is a small peaked structure built behind a chimney to divert water around it. Not every chimney needs one, but wider chimneys or chimneys that collect significant water may require this detail.
Without a cricket, water and debris can collect behind the chimney, increasing the risk of leaks, rot, and long-term damage.
Roof decking: the structural base
The roof deck, also called sheathing, is the structural surface that the roofing system is installed over. It is usually made from plywood or OSB.
Everything depends on the condition of the deck. If the sheathing is soft, rotten, delaminated, warped, or poorly fastened, a new roof covering cannot perform properly.
A healthy roof deck should be:
- Dry and free of active moisture problems.
- Solid enough to hold fasteners securely.
- Free of rot, delamination, and major warping.
- Properly fastened to the roof framing.

If there is exhaust without enough intake, the attic may pull air from the living space instead of the soffits. If there is intake without enough exhaust, warm moist air may stay trapped. Balance matters.
Insulation and air sealing
Insulation and air sealing are not always part of the roof installation itself, but they strongly affect roof performance. Warm indoor air leaking into the attic can carry moisture. When that air reaches a cold roof deck, condensation can form.
A roof system performs best when the attic has proper insulation, air sealing, clear soffit intake, balanced exhaust ventilation, and a dry roof deck.

Valleys
