Shingle “size” is more than length and width. The useful measurement includes full dimensions, visible exposure, hidden headlap, laminated thickness, overlap, and how each course stacks over the one below.

Most common laminated asphalt shingles are about 13¼–13¾ inches tall, 38¾–40⅞ inches long, and installed with roughly 5⅝–5⅞ inches exposed to the weather.

The typical size of an asphalt shingle

Modern residential shingles fall into a consistent range, but there is no single universal size. Older imperial 3-tab shingles were often 12 by 36 inches with a 5-inch exposure. Modern metric and architectural products are generally larger.

What “exposure” means

Exposure is the portion left visible after the next course is installed. A shingle can be more than 13 inches tall while less than half of it remains visible. The rest becomes hidden headlap beneath the course above.

Exposure controls course spacing, nail placement, sealant alignment, wind performance, and the finished roof pattern. Increasing exposure can uncover areas designed to remain protected. Reducing it can waste material and disrupt the designed nailing and sealant zones.

Why shingle thickness is difficult to measure

Manufacturers commonly publish dimensions, exposure, weight, coverage, and wind ratings, but not one simple thickness number. A shingle is not equally thick across the whole piece.

Its construction includes a reinforcing fibreglass mat, asphalt and mineral fillers, protective surface granules, and back surfacing. A 3-tab product is generally a single main layer. An architectural shingle bonds an additional overlay to the lower, weather-exposed portion, making that area thicker than the upper headlap.

A useful way to think about thickness

  • 3-tab shingle: one main asphalt-coated fibreglass layer.
  • Architectural headlap: usually one main hidden layer.
  • Architectural exposed area: base layer plus laminated overlay.
  • Installed roof field: the double-laminated surface overlaps the headlap below.

Butt edge, headlap, and nail zone

The lower butt edge is the thickest-looking portion and creates the shadow line seen from the ground. The upper headlap is thinner, concealed, and provides overlap beneath the next course. Between them, the designed nail zone must be fastened accurately to secure the laminated assembly and resist wind uplift.

How architectural shingles create a three-layer build

An architectural shingle contains a full base layer plus an overlay laminated to its lower section. After installation, that double-laminated exposed area sits over the single-layer headlap of the course below.

This is an effective three-layer build through much of the roof field—not three complete shingles stacked as they would be in a multi-layer reroof.

The physical build creates deeper shadows, a heavier feel, better visual masking of minor deck irregularities, and a less repetitive appearance than flat 3-tab shingles. Architectural shingles are dimensional in construction, not only in colour.

Real product dimensions

Common product lines illustrate how close—but not identical—modern shingle sizes can be. These are nominal specifications, meaning normal manufacturing tolerances apply.

A roofing “square” is 100 square feet of installed roof area. Most standard architectural products package roughly 33.3 square feet per bundle, with three bundles covering one square. Coverage is calculated using installed exposure—not the raw length multiplied by full shingle height.

How course count changes

Small exposure differences add up across a roof plane. Over 20 vertical feet, a 5⅝-inch exposure requires about 43 courses, while a 5⅞-inch exposure requires about 41. That changes layout, labour, material use, and where courses meet dormers, walls, valleys, and ridges.

Why shingle dimensions matter

During repairs

A repair shingle must match more than colour. Length, height, exposure, laminate profile, butt-edge thickness, granule blend, and weathering all influence whether the new work ties in cleanly. Older imperial 3-tab courses often cannot be matched neatly with modern metric shingles.

During roof layout

Dimensions determine course spacing, offsets, rake cuts, valley cuts, dormer tie-ins, wall intersections, and waste calculations. Consistent exposure keeps roof lines straight. Drift creates wavy rows and uneven shadows, especially on highly visible architectural roofs.

Thickness is not the same as protection

A heavier shingle can be a substantial product, but thickness alone does not make a reliable roof. Deck condition, underlayment, ice-and-water protection, starter strips, valleys, flashing, ventilation, fastening, and manufacturer-approved details matter just as much.
